What is biodiversity?

What is happening to biodiversity?
The situation is bad and it's getting worse
Biodiversity is declining at an unprecedented rateEvery tree, every leaf, every insect, every bird, every worm matters
Global Biodiversity Outlook 5
Launched 15th September 2020
The
5th UN report on Biological Diversity
Humanity stands at a crossroads with regard to the legacy it leaves to future generations. Biodiversity is declining at an unprecedented rate and the pressures driving this decline are intensifying.
None of the Aichi Biodiversity Targets* will be fully met, in turn threatening the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals and undermining efforts to address climate change.
What can we do?
We can start where we are.
Everyone can help
Here, in our corner of Nottinghamshire, we can make a difference. If you have a garden, you can increase the biodiversity on your own patch and, together, we can campaign for local public spaces to be managed in a more wildlife-friendly way. We are already talking with the Parish Council in Burton Joyce and with our Gedling Borough councillors. If you can help, please join the conversation
There are some useful suggestions here from the RHS on Attracting wildlife to your garden
Top tips:
- Don't mow your lawn (so much)!
- Make a bug hotel and / or a log pile
- Create gaps in under fences for hedgehogs to move freely from one garden to another
- Have a pond, birdbath or puddle; even just a dish of water
